Is Your Fear of Success in Interior Design Holding You Back?

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

Hi friends in the world of Interior Design! Let's chat about something that might seem a bit odd: the fear of success. We all get the fear of failure, but success? It might sound strange, but it's more common than you think, and it might be lurking in your subconscious without you even realizing it.

Success in Interior Design isn't all about creating the perfect workcation space or having the most Pinterest-worthy designs. It's not all rainbows and butterflies, and deep down, you know that. With success comes attention, requests for help, and perhaps even a sense of disappointment. It's not exactly a party when you reach your biggest goals, only to feel unfulfilled.

Success can be a double-edged sword. It can make your life easier in some ways, but more challenging in others. It can open up multiple streams of income, but it can also bring more responsibilities. Every situation, after all, has its pros and cons.

You might be wrestling with a fear of success if you find yourself sabotaging your progress or struggling to chase your dreams. Maybe you've thought about starting side hustles related to Interior Design, but fear has been holding you back.

Let's dive into how the fear of success can put a damper on your progress in the Interior Design industry:

Success demands more from you

Our brains are comfort-seeking machines. Comfort equates to survival, which is your brain's main goal. Making a change in your life means altering your behavior, mindset, and maybe even your beliefs and values. That can stir up a whole lot of discomfort, especially when you're trying to juggle multiple streams of income or start side hustles.

Success brings social pressure

Success isn't just about a hefty bank account and accolades. People start to see you differently when you're successful. In fact, folks who once overlooked you might start taking notice. If you're raking in the big bucks from your Interior Design business and side hustles, people might start asking you for financial assistance. Long-lost relatives might start reaching out to you too.

Success is uncharted territory for you, and you fear the unknown

You're familiar with your current situation. You might not be thrilled with it, but at least you know what to expect each day. Changing your life means facing new situations and meeting new people. That can be a bit daunting, especially when you're trying to create the perfect workcation space or manage your different side hustle for multiple streams of income.

  • Fear of being in power position. You worry about what you could become if you had more money and power, you worry about how others will see you moving on.

  • Fear of not living up to other's expectations. We humans are wired to be discontent. You worry your success is not sustainable and you might be the next letdown or disappointment.

  • Fear of criticism. Many people are suspicious and critical of successful people. A lot of this is often due to jealousy. Maybe you're worried that you'll be viewed negatively by those around you.

  • Fear that you'll turn into someone you don't like. While there's no reason that success would fundamentally change who you are, many people believe that success is somehow toxic, money is evil and rich is self-centered etc. However, success can actually give you more opportunities and freedom to be your true self.

The fear of success might not be as blatant as the fear of failure, but it's a real hurdle for some people.

If you're not passionately pursuing your goals in Interior Design, it's worth asking why. Are you afraid of success? Remember, success isn't perfect, but for most of us, it's a better option than not reaching our full potential!
